Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Mechanisms

Apoptotic cellular debris at the core of atherosclerotic plaques may produce inflammation and instability leading to heart attacks. We show here that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which display exquisite selectivity for inflammatory monocytes/macrophages, can deliver a potent small molecule intracellular inhibitor highly selective for SHP1 via pH-dependent release to re-stimulate macrophage uptake of apoptotic cellular debris.
